Our Origin Story: How Phaux Began (and Why pH Changed Everything)

Courtney & Maggie

“I wish I could get a spray tan, but I can’t handle the smell.”

It’s a sentence we’ve heard again and again — and one we understood immediately, because we were right there with everyone saying it. We’ve been avid self-tanners for years, and at one point we were tanning three to four times a month. We loved the glow, the confidence, the instant “well-rested” effect… but the post-tan odor? That part felt unavoidable.

Until 2020.

The TikTok That Sparked a Big Idea

A friend sent us a TikTok about minimizing post-tan smell. The creator shared a tip that sounded a little random at first: she used a feminine hygiene wash after self-tanning and noticed a big difference in odor.

Her reasoning stuck with us. The active ingredient in most self-tanners is DHA, and the post-tan smell is often associated with the chemical reaction that creates color — plus the way the skin can feel “off” afterward. Feminine washes are commonly formulated to support pH balance, so the idea was that a pH-supporting cleanse might help minimize that lingering odor.

We were intrigued… and honestly, skeptical.

So we tried it.

And to our surprise, it worked.

The “Wait… Why Isn’t This a Real Product?” Moment

Here’s the thing: we’ve worked in beauty manufacturing for over a decade. So while this was exciting as self-tanners, it also triggered the part of our brains that immediately thinks in formulas, product gaps, and consumer pain points.

Because as helpful as that workaround was, it wasn’t a true solution.

A feminine wash is designed for a very specific part of the body with very specific needs — and the skin on your legs, arms, torso, and back has different requirements entirely. The pH needs aren’t the same. The usage isn’t the same. And the experience shouldn’t feel like a “women-only hack” when self-tanning is for everyone.

We kept thinking the same thing:

Why doesn’t a body wash exist that’s actually made for self-tanners?

That question was the seed of Phaux.

Why It Took Time

We’d come back to the idea year after year. But life was happening — weddings, babies, career turning points, everything that fills your calendar and pushes a dream into the “someday” category.

Still, we couldn’t let it go.

We kept watching the self-tanning world grow. New formulas. More influencers. Better color. Better application. More professional spray-tan options than ever.

But the aftercare? The routine? The support products that make the whole experience feel elevated and effortless?

That part wasn’t catching up.

And we didn’t want to launch “just another self-tanning brand.” We wanted to create something different: a solution brand — starting with post-tan odor, but built to become an essential part of the self-tanning lifestyle.

The Science (and the Testing) That Made It Real

Once we committed to building this properly, we went all in.

We tested body washes, feminine washes, and self-tanning products — not just on vibes, but with real measurement. We used pH strips and a skin scanning device to track changes throughout the self-tan process: before tanning, during development, and after showering.

The results were validating.

We could see what we’d already experienced: certain washes left skin feeling stripped and out of balance, while more pH-supportive formulas helped the skin feel calmer and more “normal” — and the odor was noticeably reduced.

We had the concept.

We had the data.

Now we needed the product.

Building the Phaux Wash

Developing the right formula took time — nearly two years of testing, refining, and finding the right manufacturing partner. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to launch with two options:

  • A scented formula for anyone who loves a luxe shower experience
  • An unscented formula designed with sensitive skin in mind

We both personally love fragrance — but if we were going to build a brand rooted in skin balance, we needed an option that prioritized simplicity, gentleness, and broad accessibility. We wanted Phaux to be for everyone who self-tans: every skin type, every routine, every comfort level.

Designed for Real Life (Down to the Last Drop)

Then came packaging — because we didn’t want a product that just worked. We wanted a product that felt good to use.

We designed a bottle that looks fun in your shower, but is also genuinely functional. The cap is flat so you can flip the bottle over and use it down to the final drop — because if there’s one thing we believe in, it’s making the routine easier, not harder.

Why the Name “Phaux”

Phaux is a play on the word “faux,” like all great self-tans are. But it’s also an ode to what started it all: pH — the missing piece we couldn’t stop thinking about.

Welcome to the Phamily

Launching Phaux has been a dream — and while we’re proud to help self-tanners finally say goodbye to post-tan odor, we’re even more excited about what’s next.

Because Phaux was never meant to be a one-product idea. We’re building something bigger: a brand made to truly improve the self-tanning lifestyle — from prep, to glow, to maintenance, to the everyday little details that make you feel confident in your skin.

Welcome to the Phamily.
